Rufus Reid
Rufus Reid was originally married to Nancy Latta. After Nancy
died and following a long period of mourning by the widowed
Betsy Latta Davidson, Rufus and Betsy were married. After
Betsy's death, Rufus married his third and final wife, the
stepdaughter of Polly Latta Torrance

Major Rufus Reid was somewhat less concerned
with the evils of this world and the bliss of the next than
the women of his family. There is a story that, on one occasion,
they requested he advertise the coming of a noted evangelist.
Probably protracted camp meetings were objectionable to the
Major because they took people away from their work. At any
rate, what he painted on the barn, according to legend, was
something like this: COMING, THE REVEREND ____________, to
abuse and vilify the devil!
The above incident is extracted from writings of Dr. Chalmbers
Davidson, Davidson College..
