| The upstairs is a family area and its
woodwork is not as fancy as that downstairs. Even the
ceilings are a foot lower. Just the same, this part
of the house is far, far nicer than what the vast majority
of area residents could ever hope to own.
The upstairs hall is has entrances leading to the master
bedroom and to the small unheated bed chamber that probably
served as the room for a slave who acted as a personal
attendant or who was in charge of the children.
There is also an enclosed staircase leading to the
garret.
The upstairs hall was sometimes used as sleeping quarters
for slaves who had accompanied their visiting owners
and who acted as valets or personal maids.
