Well House

The well house is the only brick building on Historic Latta Plantation. Its porch shelters the well itself. The interior of the building would have been used for cool storage of food. The dirt floor would have been dug down much lower than today's level, and could have been as much as five feet deep. A granite trough rests on the floor and would have been filled with water. The water would have stayed at about 55 degrees Fahrenheit, even in the summer. This is not enough to keep milk from souring but would, at least, retard spoilage.
