Paddle to the Past - The Battle of Cowan’s Ford

On Wednesday, February 1st, 2017, Historic Latta Plantation along with the Latta Plantation Nature Preserve will be hosting a unique historic and natural science opportunity. Enjoy a guided tour of a 5 mile stretch of the Catawba River, by kayak or canoe.
On February 1st, 1781 Lord Cornwallis and approximately 5,000 British soldiers crossed the Catawba River at Cowan’s Ford on the north side of Mecklenburg County. Major General William Lee Davidson, with about 500 militiamen, were on the opposite bank to give a thunderous welcome. What is known as the Battle of Cowan’s Ford erupted.
On this 236th Anniversary of the battle take a 5 mile paddle along one of the most scenic stretches of the Catawba River and learn from local historians about this pivotal part of American history. Enjoy the scenery and visions of wildlife as you paddle through the quiet coves along the way. All kayaks, canoes, and paddling equipment are provided.
